Sustainable uses of biodiversity in a protected area of Ecuadorian Amazonia (2006-2011)

Abstract

This study reports results on uses given by an indigenous community to biodiversity evolving in a protected area of Ecuadorian Amazon. Its current usage levels are compared in terms of their sustainability with those recorded five years earlier. Results show a high annual growth rate of the population of the indigenous community, as well as low incomeand welfare levels. Data equally shows that biodiversity use levels by indigenous community remain crucial for their survival. These wild populations persistently generate environmental services over time, which infer their sustainable use in the time period analyzed. However, serious doubts appear on the continuity of this trend in the medium andlong term.
