The article remembers the attempts of systematization of knowledge previous to the Romanticism and summarizes the evolution of the literary historiography during centuries XIX and XX to later present/display some methodological reflections with respect to the literary work classification from the proposals formulated by Ottmar Ette in a recent book. It shows that any attempt "to systematize" a set of knowledge or literary works ends quickly at systems of properties partially shared whose structures seem arbitrary, and that is perhaps sometimes preferable to visualize them in similar schemes to which they were used to synthesize the numerous currents that characterize the evolution of the plastic arts as of 1890.
