It’s not easy trying to define and name briefly the theoretical approach of Family Therapy. The identity of Family Therapy can be recognized through the dynamics of the diversity that constitutes it. Our proposal aims to emphasize the differences in the history of Family Therapy and consider a systematic articulation of the theoretic and practical approaches. In a research that had family therapists from Rio de Janeiro as subjects, we were able to confirm both the predominance of the systemic theory initially, as well as the differences in the course of their careers. We present some reports on professional experiences that point to the main characteristics. We concluded by emphasizing the debate on the articulation between different theories and therapeutical practices and the historical importance of Brazil and Latin America.
