This article examines the translation and adaptation of French playwright Victorien Sardou’s works in China (1907-1946). It first discusses the evolution of the image of Sardou’s works in Chinese literary circles, from “world-renowned plays” to “well-made plays”. Next, it focuses on the translation and adaptation of the playwright’s two most popular plays on the Chinese stage, La Tosca and Patrie! , examining how the theme of “revolution and love”, popular in modern Chinese literature, influenced the reception of Sardou in China. Finally, through the reception case of Sardou’s works in China, this article explores the relationship between commerce, politics and art in the development of modern Chinese theater.
