From “advocates a holy cause” to “lackeys of imperialism”. The Communist Party of the Argentina and the conflict of Suez (1956)

Abstract

The Middle East conflict has its roots in the creation of the State of Israel. The emergence of this new political entity in 1948 gave way to an unresolved issue whose consequences still affect the current world situation. This article analyzes the official position of the Communist Party of Argentina (CPA) regarding the Sinai War. The USSR supported the nationalization of the Suez Canal, presenting it as a people’s fight for independence against the forces of imperialism. Thus, the CAP ended up taking a prominently pro-Arab stance, as reflected in the Party’s press publications –Nuestra Palabra and Nueva Era-, as well as in the writings of Rubén Sinay, one of the CPA’s most salient intellectuals.
