Effect of lateral resisting systems on the wind-induced serviceability response of tall timber buildings

Timber, a lightweight and environmentally friendly material, has gained popularity in construction due to its positive impact on sustainability. However, concerns regarding occupant comfort arise from the lightweight of timber, leading to various vibration issues of tall buildings. This study compares the performance of three structural systems: frames, shear walls, and diagrid systems, under wind loads. This research aims to identify the most efficient structural solutions by analyzing deflection, inter-story drift, and peak acceleration under design wind loads. The performance of these structural systems was evaluated based on ISO 10137 comfort level. The results demonstrate that the diagrid system outperforms the frame and shear wall systems regarding withstanding lateral forces, exhibiting higher natural frequencies and lower peak acceleration. Furthermore, considering the deflection of each system, which is influenced by structural stiffness, the diagrid system demonstrates a deflection of only 13.24 mm under design loads, which is lower than that of the frame and shear wall system.
