Abstract | Full Text

The similarities between Zola’s Vérité (Gerçek)and Resat Nuri Güntekin’s Yesil Gece, which depict theconflicts between religious and secular schools, havebeen noted by many critics. However, while most criticsfailed to see the similarity of social problems existing inthe periods in which the authors lived as the source ofthe similarities between the two novels, some critics evenpoint to Gerçek as the source of inspiration for Yesil Gece.Abuse of religion and religious orthodoxy displayuniversal patterns. Even though Yesil Gece resemblesGerçek in terms of subject matter and characters, theseresemblances are of universal quality. The source ofthese universal resemblances is common sensibility. Therefore, when Güntekin’s statements about his noveland historical facts are considered, it is seen that thesimilarities stem from common sensibility.
