From Champa unglazed pottery to Cham Bàu Trúc pottery: a comparative approach to technology and production
Abstract
This article compares the contemporary Cham Bàu Trúc pottery with the ancient Champa pottery to better understand the history and development of traditional ceramics in Southeast Asia. The authors analyze production techniques, including raw materials, shaping, decoration, and firing, and compare the forms and functions of pottery from the two periods. Despite differences in style and technique, the article argues that Bàu Trúc pottery originates from the Champa pottery tradition, as evidenced by similar raw clay materials and open-air firing methods. The article also highlights pottery’s role in the Cham community’s cultural life, from daily activities to religious ceremonies. Finally, the author suggests further comparative research between Cham pottery and other ethnic groups related to the Champa culture to provide a more comprehensive view of the region’s rich ceramic heritage.
