A Thematic Analysis of Cry, the Beloved Country
Abstract
Abstract: The current paper aims to shed light on Allan Paton's masterpiece Cry, the Beloved Country. It provides a comprehensive thematic analysis of two prominent themes in his novel, including reconciliation and biblical allusion. This study investigates the ways the author employs the two themes in the development of the novel and the significance behind using them. We have opted for the descriptive method, using an analytic approach to scrutinise the multiple aspects of language use that express the two concepts. The outcomes of the analysis show that the author deliberately employs symbolism, speech acts along with actions to invigorate the themes of reconciliation and biblical references. The two themes convey messages of cooperation, love, and forgiveness between Blacks and Whites. Keywords: biblical allusion, Blacks and Whites, love and forgiveness, reconciliation, thematic analysis
