Abstract

Abstract Materiality and meaning in the age of man? Human activity no longer just affects isolated ecosystems, local climatic processes or local environments. Our presence, actions and lives affect the planet as a whole. Some geologists even claim that we have entered a new planetary era: «the Antropocen». Media and media technologies are part of this age, but this has received little attention in media studies and other parts of the social sciences and the humanities. However, if humanity has really become a force affecting the geological history of the earth, the significance of the social sciences and humanities, including media studies, will increase. This, we claim, should have consequences for the way we, as social scientists and humanists, write, think and understand the relationship between materiality and meaning.
