The size and content of the ceramic particles have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of ceramic particle reinforced metal matrix composites. To study the effect of size and content of the ceramic particles on the impact mechanical properties of the composites, Charpy impact tests are commonly used.In this paper, the size and size-fractionation effects of the ZTA particles on the impact mechanical properties of ZTAp/Fe45 composites were investigated by means of both finite element simulation and experiment methods, and the simulated and experimental results were compared and analyzed. The results show that the simulated failure modes and the morphology of the fracture zone of the two dimension ZTAp/Fe45 composites model match well with the experimental data.Without consideration of the interfacial bonding properties between the ZTA particles and the defects in matrix result in a discrepancy between the simulated and experimental impact absorbed energy of the ZTAp/Fe45 composites.
