The mission in Afghanistan, which began as a response by the United States to the attacks by al-Quaida on 9 September 2001, turned into a nation-building project involving several NATO members. The Coalition’s precipitous with drawal from Afghanistan in 2001 and the return of the Taliban to power was seen by the public as a defeat for the Western political actors involved. An analysis of the situation in Afghanistan shows us that the Coalition members took an inadequate approach to the project of building Afghanistan, as they ignored the defining elements of this country, from the geographical to the demographic and cultural components. However, after 20 years of involvement in the building of Afghanistan, a positive balance can also be drawn, in which the achievements of the West, from infrastructure to education, can be added up. After this experience, the US has decided that this is the last nation-building project it has ever been involved in. As a result of this decision, we are witnessing an ‘American return’ to the Euro-Atlantic area, with US involvement in the management of the Russia-Ukraine conflict being a clear proof. As for Afghanistan, we are still talking about a weak state, as the Taliban do not have the strength to develop it, as long as they have already started a conflict with the terrorist group ISIS.
