“FUTBOLNE HRYSHCHE – FUDBALEVE IHRYSHCHE”: VARIABILITY IN UKRAINIAN FOOTBALL TERMINOLOGY IN THE 1ST HALF OF ХХ CENTURY

Abstract

Variability is one of the main features of the language, and it is also characteristics of branch terminological systems. This article proves that variability is a structural phenomenon, unlike synonymy which is a semantic phenomenon. I use complex methodology elaborated on the basis of theoretical researches by Ukrainian linguists who have created criteria of distinguishing term variants. The aim of the article is to trace variability in Ukrainian football terminology in the 1st half of ХХ century and intends on solving a series of tasks: 1) to spot examples of variability of football names having distinguished them from units that illustrate synonymy; 2) to carry out typological classification of the variant football names found; 3) to find the reasons of appearance of variability in football terminology in the researched period. As the analysis has shown Ukrainian football terminology od the 1st half of ХХ century has all the kinds of term variability: phonetic, graphic, orthographic, word-building, morphological and syntactic. The majority of the examples demonstrate the results of adaptation of loanwords, but there are also variant original names. It is quite natural because during the researched period football terminology was at the stage of formation of its own arsenal of conceptual and terminological means and there were several variant names for the same football notion competing. The prospect of further researches lies in tracing the dynamics of variability in the following periods of development of football terminology of the Ukrainian language.
