The authors are offering a new approach in order to determine the mechanical characteristics of the constituent elements, respectively the strain-field evaluation for the ships’ structural elements. The proposed methods (VIC-3D and ESPI/Shearography) seem to fulfil all requirements of modern, noncontact and high-accuracy investigations. The former gives the 3D displacements field in the range of (1μm…25 cm), and the latter (mostly in 2D): (20….330) nm. Both of them assure the corresponding strain fields (linear as well as angular). In the authors’ opinion, these methods will practically completely substitute several classical investigation methods, which are less accurate and also more time-consuming. The described methods are briefly illustrated in the mechanical characteristics evaluation of the wood, respectively of the dental filling materials.
