Análisis comparativo de las cofradías de pescadores de Castilla (siglos XIII - XV)

Abstract

In this paper, we make a comparative analysis of the most important fishing associations in Castile between the 13th and 15th centuries, and we study how they were organised in guilds. The guilds served the purpose of safeguarding the interests of their members, regulating markets and work and representing the fishing community socially and politically. In addition, they enjoyed jurisdictional authority, had religious duties and supplied social benefits for their members. Their authority and legal competence varied in accordance with the importance of individual fishing community.
