Cyanide Poisoning
Abstract
Abstract This simulation presents learners with a smoke inhalation victim who is critically ill. In addition to performing the actions necessary to resuscitate a critically ill smoke inhalation victim, including airway and IV fluid management, participants must recognize that the patient is not improving and diagnose and treat cyanide poisoning. This scenario is performed on a high-fidelity simulator and is appropriate for emergency medicine residents or medical students. This simulation has been used as a teaching case for a group of six first-year residents at the conclusion of a series of didactic lectures on toxicology. Three of the residents were active participants in the scenario, while the other three observed and provided feedback. This case was also used with a group of four second-year residents at the end of the year. Both groups of residents were able to recognize cyanide poisoning and successfully complete the case.
