This study deals with the most relevant Viennese magazines of humour and satire (Der Floh, Figaro, Kikeriki! and Wiener Caricaturen), published at the time of the emergence and early years of the Vienna Secession movement. Its aim is to ascertain the nature of their mediation between the modernist tendencies in art and the local general public. The main focus is on these periodicals’ positions in their contemporary polemic around modernism. In dealing with this polemic, the author also refers to the use of elements of humour by protagonists and advocates of the Vienna Secession movement, most notably in the periodical Ver sacrum.
