Family and Clan Genealogy of the Khori-Buryats: Current State and Development (Based on Field Research Data)
Abstract
The paper is devoted to the state of family and tribal genealogy among the Khori-Buryats. In 2020, the author took field trips to collect genealogical legends of the Buryats who identify themselves with 11 clans: Barun- and Zun-Khuatsai, Galzuud, Saganuud, Batanai, Harganaad, Khalbin, Gushaad, Bodonguud, Sharaid, Khubduud, Khudai. The collected materials served to study to which degree the ancestral (genealogical), family and patronymic traditions are preserved in folklore narratives. The survey was carried out by interviewing the local population (mainly the elderly). An analysis of the results proves that at least for the late 2020, the eastern regions of the Republic of Buryatia and the territory of the Aginsky Buryat District of the Trans-Baikal Territory showcase strong preservation of family and clan genealogy among the Khori-Buryats.
