This paper evaluates the performance of the combination of optimization techniques and discrete-event simulation, which, in general, are considered mutually exclusive in the Operations Research area. Optimization Techniques seeks a unique and often exact solution to a problem. On the other hand, discrete-event simulation analyzes the interdependence and interaction between the elements of the system under study, over time. It is expected that, by combining the two techniques, it will be possible to share complementary information of the techniques, in order to find a better solution for the study. Thus, the present study uses both techniques to solve a problem of selection of products to be manufactured in an automotive company, with designation of which products will be produced in each production line, by means of the optimization of the input data of the simulation. The combination of techniques enabled a better use of the lines and the operators, which presented a potential reduction of up to 40% in their utilization index.
