— In the history of human society, the industry has been the bearer of economic growth and development, as the world economies as a whole, as well as economies of individual countries. Spectacular economic growth begins with the industrial revolution, when it comes to replacing of agriculture as, by then, the leading economic branch, with industry, and whose primary lasts to the present day. This conclusion is being confirmed by the example of the Serbian economy, as after World War II, the industry as an economic activity, ie industrialization as a process of transformation of the economic structure of a country, based on the development of the industry, played a crucial role in the post-war economic development. With the process of transition of the Serbian economy, which lasts for over twenty-five years, and the completion of which cannot be predicted, occurred a complete de-industrialization of the country. The paper points out the key issues of the transition of the Serbian economy, necessarily abandoning of postulates of the "Washington consensus, the consequences of the process of de-industrialization, as well as the importance of the process of re-industrialization and priority sectors for reindustrialization.
