The concept of territory is widely discussed within the human and social sciences, offering varying interpretations and applications. This article provides a multidisciplinary overview of the current state of research, positioning different schools of thought on the concept of territory in relation to one another. It aims to provide a succinct overview of various theoretical discussions without exhausting detail. The primary objective is to map out the extensive French, English, and Spanish literature on territory, drawing from approximately 120 references. A secondary objective is to unite these disparate discussions, which often operate in isolation, around three common issues. Lastly, the article aims to put forward for discussion the fundamental characteristics that might constitute the original conceptual core of territory, synthesizing insights from cross-disciplinary literature. Territorialisation is conceptualized here as a process of shared appropriation that facilitates the coexistence of social groups within shared environments or spaces.
