Typical lung carcinoid associated with ovarian teratoma in simultaneous diagnosis and treatment

Abstract

Introduction: Pulmonary carcinoid tumors are rare malignant epithelial neuroendocrine neoplasms. Objective: To describe the clinical case of a patient with a typical lung carcinoid tumor associated with the diagnosis and synchronous treatment of an ovarian teratoma. Clinical Case: Female patient who started studies due to diverticulitis with abdominal pain, dyspepsia and diarrhea. In the evaluation with computerized axial tomography, the diverticular pattern of the sigmoid colon was reported, as well as the incidental diagnosis of a left lung nodule and an ovarian teratoma. The multidisciplinary team decided on a curative therapeutic strategy with different surgical techniques. A lower lobectomy plus oophorectomy was performed, both left, at the same surgery time, without complications. The post-surgical lung biopsy reported a typical carcinoid tumor and the ovarian surgical specimen reported a 7 cm mature teratoma. Conclusions: Surgery with total resection of the tumor in the same surgical act is curative for both tumors. Currently, the patient is cured, asymptomatic, and free of recurrence with a good quality of life.
