Among the battles fought by the Catholic Church during the first biennium of the Second Spanish Republic, prior to the promulgation of the Law of Clergy Assets (Ley de Haberes del Clero) on April 1934, particularly significant, and yet rather unknown, is the struggle before the Parliament; to be more accurate, before some representatives whom the Church tried to win over in the case of the ecclesiastical budget allocation, about which sooner or later they would have to cast their vote. This task was assigned to a commission of canons created to that effect, whose members addressed – always individually and with all due discretion – the most influential representatives. At the same time they mobilize all diocesan authorities in a effort to reach all elected officials in the different circumscriptions.
