Landscape as a Resource to be Designed
Abstract
For the first time, the Voyage pittoresque of Saint-Non offered an image of landscapes suited to the romantic perception of the sublime, the result of a peculiar interpenetration between the work of man and a very varied and magnificently “wild” nature. Today, much of that perception is compromised, if not irretrievably lost. Will it be possible to recover, revitalizing a landscape so characterized and fascinating? Will it be possible to reconcile the recovery of historical perception with the demands of modernity? To do this we must consider the landscape as a resource to be designed with wisdom. This design wisdom must consist in considering local conditions not as constraints but as useful suggestions: starting from the place, from the geomorphological and landscape context, to give the project a territorial scale with ecological connotations, in a philosophical meaning extended to a social and historical vision of the landscape.
