Effects of prophylactic ileostomy on nutrition and metabolism in sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer
Abstract
[Abstract] Patients undergoing prophylactic ileostomy during sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer lack the absorptive functions of the terminal ileum and colorectum. This may impact lipid metabolism, disrupt water and electrolyte balance, and disturb acid-base balance. In severe cases, it can lead to malnutrition or high-output syndrome. This article reviews the effects of prophylactic ileostomy on nutrition and metabolism in sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer, drawing on relevant literature.
