The article deals with the phenomenological approach to understanding dreams, its essence and difference from other ap-proaches. The methodical and methodological bases of the approach are also described. An example of the analysis of qualita-tive data is given on the basis of real empirical material: on the one hand – structuring and ordering by means of «Grounded theory», on another – description of direct dynamics of process of understanding of dreams. In the conclusion importance of a role of a dreamer for understanding of a dream is revealed. It is specified that only the dreamer himself can collect parts of a dream into the ‘Whole’ by means of a narrative and, thus, understand its meaning.
