Family business has always played an important role in any economy. As family businesses develop and grow, a question of sustainability arises. To maintain family businesses in the long term it is necessary for them to be passed on to future generations. The tradition of family firms in the Czech Republic has been interrupted for four decades by historical circumstances. Although the topic of succession is a very important part of family business issues, and as this paper demonstrates, this issue is being explored by foreign authors, there is currently no major academic attention in the Czech Republic. Succession - the process of passing the company to the next generation, be one of the indispensable aspects of maintaining sustainability of family businesses. For family business to function long time (for example, several decades), there must be a transition of ownership, or management, from one, usually older, generation to another, usually younger, generation of business owners, followed by next generations. Generational change and succession is a process that can be successfully completed only under certain assumptions, some of which are key to mastering this change, and should therefore be known to actors of this process. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of how the success of family businesses in the Czech Republic is addressed and researched. Due to the nature of the goal, the character of this article is an overview article. Data is primarily based on publicly available information, which is presented in the text.
