Downhole very broadband seismograph can obtain weak, rich and accurate broadband crust motion information, including formation microfracture and slow earthquake. It is one kind of critical instruments which is widely applied in seismology, earthquake prediction and related disciplines. Research and development of downhole very broadband seismograph with China independent intellectual property and promoting its engineering and industrialization is one of most important directions of seismic observation instruments. In this paper, we introduce the research objectives, research contents and main innovations of ‘Research and application development of downhole very broadband seismograph’, which is a project of National Key Foundation for Exploring Scientific Instrument of China National Key Research and Development Program. In this project, we successfully developed a very broadband seismograph product with China independent intellectual property that can be deployed at 2000 m depth boreholes and will be demonstratively applied in China national major projects. This marks the break-up of the leading position of foreign countries in the field of deep borehole very broadband seismic observation by China product. It will also promotes the development of China seismic observation technology. Besides this article, we will use other four articles in this column to introduce the details of main progress of this project.
