¿Alquimistas mentecatos? Traducciones inglesas de La garduña de Sevilla, 1665-1792
Abstract
This article examines aspects of the reception of Castillo Solórzano in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England. It analyses five separate English works derived wholly or in part from La garduña de Sevilla. Particular attention is paid to the debt of these works to both a French intermediary and, subsequently, the first English translation by John Davies of Kidwelly (1665). It shows how later ‘translators’, including the controversial figure of Sir Roger L’Estrange, adapted Davies’s work in a number of ways.
