Nonlinear time history analysis evaluation of optimized design for medium to high rise buildings using performance-based design

The performance-based design has been widely accepted as an alternative design method for designing and rehabilitating new and existing buildings. However, some codes and design guidelines do not allow this method to be implemented. One example is the Egyptian code of practice (ECP-201). This shortage in the seismic design in the code has caused many problems in the design of high-rise buildings. In this study, three reinforced concrete case studies of up to 40 stories were designed according to the ECP-201 and optimized for better performance and cost reduction. Moreover, the optimized models were evaluated using two seismic hazard levels; design- based earthquake (DBE) and maximum considerable earthquake (MCE), which proved compliance with the ASCE 41–13 limits. The findings show that the optimized models comply and outperform the ECP-201 in terms of ductility increase ranging from 110% to 150%. Consequently, the results demonstrated the benefits of implementing the performance-based design procedures to design and evaluate mid to high-rise buildings in the Egyptian code of practice.
