Physical Examination Case: Vital Signs
Abstract
Abstract This physical examination case on obtaining vital signs is designed to provide healthcare profession students the opportunity to work in teams to answer questions. This case is intended for students who are at the beginning of their health care education (e.g. first-year students). In addition to this case exercise, students should participate in facilitator-led small-group sessions to practice their clinical skills. This case is designed as a collaborative problem-based exercise where groups of students work together in researching, discussing, and answering questions. Students are expected to direct the flow of the session by guiding each other in their problem-solving efforts. This modality encourages students to be more motivated and proactive in their learning, which sets the pattern for them to become successful life-long learners. Average objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) scores in the vital signs station increased from 84.7 to 91.4 out of 100 after the introduction of the case-based exercise, demonstrating improved competence. Facilitators have verbally informed us that students are more prepared and engaged in the clinical sessions because their knowledge has improved. As a result, there is more focus and attention on the actual techniques.
