In this study, a simplex satellite communications link has been designed between a transmitting ground station, and a receiving ground station, by way of a geosynchronous satellite. Design structure allows duplex utilization of the link by employing different polarizations. Effects of precipitation and interference have been taken into consideration. Link bit error rates have been analyzed for digital communications at C, X, Ku and Ka bands, using “Quadrature Phase Shift Keying” (QPSK) and “Binary Phase Shift Keying” (BPSK) modulations, and for satellite transponder bandwidths of 36 MHz and 72 MHz. Studies were carried out under various scenarios and optimizations were achieved utilizing the “Continuous Parameter Genetic Algorithm” (CPGA) method. Optimum link parameters were determined in each case, resulting in the lowest bit error rate, for a simplex communications link established between a transmitting ground station and a receiving ground station, by exploiting a geosynchronous satellite. Calculations were performed using a unique computer program incorporating a graphic interface, which was developed in MATLAB.
