Tolerância: uma questão política ou moral?

Abstract

Este artigo analisa as dificuldades e os limites da proposta liberal de fundamentar moralmente a tolerância a partir do ideal de autonomia. O autor argumenta a favor de uma justificação mais cética, contextualista, política e pragmática da tolerância para um Estado liberal democrático. O problema da tolerância deve ser tratado como uma questão política, e não moral. A tolerância como prática do Estado liberal deve preencher uma exigência básica de legitimação, que delimita o exercício do poder político, segundo a qual aqueles que reivindicam a autoridade política sobre os demais devem oferecer boas razões sobre as bases dessa autoridade.The article analyses the difficulties and the limits of the liberal proposal of grounding morally the tolerance from the ideal of autonomy. The author argues for a more sceptical, contextualist, political and pragmatic justification of the tolerance for a liberal democratic State. The problem of the tolerance must be treated as a political question, and not moral. The tolerance as practice of the liberal State must fill out a basic demand of legitimation, which delimits the exercise of the political power, according to those who claim the political authority on the others must offer good reasons about the basis of this authority.
