Bacillus S11 (BS11), a Gram-positive spore forming bacteria, was identified as Bacillus subtilis, based on biochemicaltests, physical morphology, and 16S rRNA gene sequence. BS11 was found to be safe as probiotic for shrimp because it doesnot produce either detectable antimicrobial substance or enterotoxin. A potential specific markers of BS11 by RAPD-PCR wasindicated using UBC459 primer (5'-GCGTCGAGGG -3') and the sequence of the major band, a size of 0.4 kb fragment, is similarto the gene encoding of a protein of the phosphotransferase system (PTS) glucosamine-specific enzyme glucosamine-6-phosphate isomerase from Bacillus subtilis strain subsp. subtilis 168.
