Simultaneous Resident and Faculty Evaluation of an Airway Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

Abstract

Abstract Our anesthesiology department has instituted an elective advanced difficult airway curriculum for the third-year clinical anesthesiology resident. One of the metrics that is used for assessment of this rotation is the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Using the Difficult Airway Algorithm as a guide, three clinical skill sets and one multiple-choice question set were utilized as OSCE stations. The rotation is a multi-modal program that consists of computer and partial task simulation, web-based didactics, problem-based learning discussions and intraoperative experience. The skills tested include fiberoptic bronchoscopy, fiberoptic-guided supraglottic ETT exchange, and cricothyrotomy. The OSCE has been effective in identifying that residents are competent in airway management skills as well as those residents that may benefit from continued advanced airway management training.
