Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the students from different social background profit from the local opportunities of cultural outings. We conducted our study by using questionnaire replies and interviews with students from a French University. Both approaches were designed by taking into account our precise knowledge of the entertainment and art venues in the town and its surroundings. We combined quantitative analysis of the attendance at concert or dance halls, and theatres or cinemas, with qualitative analysis of their programs and their access modalities. This allowed us to emphasize different configurations of cultural institutions, based on the similarity of their audience and cultural offer. Finally, we highlight several typical schemes of cultural outings among the students, whose aesthetic and practical judgments on cultural institutions depend on their socialization context.
