In the course of the 2000 s, several medium-size cities in the East of France decided to design new neighborhoods dedicated mostly to housing. The first residents settled there while the area is still under construction. They are moving into new homes surrounded by public and common spaces in the making. This article explores the tensions between space under construction and housing space. It shows how the relationship to housing and the relationship to the neighbourhood are part of the social relations that take shape in these new areas. Furthermore, this article also explores the social distinction process as well as the ongoing neutralization of public spaces throughout the study of those districts in the making.
