Pau de arara: la violence militaire au Brésil was published in France by François Maspero in 1971 and was censored in Brazil, at the time under military rule (1964-1985). The work only came to be published in Brazil in 2013, that is, more than 40 years later. This article discusses the two editions of the book: the 1971 edition in French and the 2013 edition in Portuguese, seeking to understand them in the specificity of the different historical moments of their publication. The text also presents the trajectory of the authors and the origin of the published material. Finally, this article inserts the book within a larger body of denunciations against torture carried out by agents of the Brazilian dictatorship, bringing to the fore the discussion of torture in Brazil.
