Are Flood Zones Atlas (AZI; Atlas de Zones Inondables) by hydrogeomorphological (HGM) approach effective in communicating flood hazard? What changes are possible to promote the dissemination of this approach? A survey carried out among semi-experts and non-experts and an analysis of legend contents of flood zone atlas allow us to highlight the main limitations of the actual maps. Such limitations include the type of geographic information created, graphic semiology, but also the possible gap between the interpretation of the field by geomorphologists and the understanding of the final mapping by non-experts. Highlighting these limits leads to the proposal of a simplified AZI legend which should allow a better understanding of geographic information and a faster achievement for geomorphologists.
