Abstract
In 2004 researches in political science strenghten the earlier thought of numerous witnesses: the « people » (i.e. the working class people), which has been seen for long in French political life as an answer to « the social problem », is seen to-day only as a problem. Men and women who think of themselves as members of the « people » don’t listen without some impatience to the discourses that bring discredit on them. This paper offers to examine what James C. Scott calls a piece of subaltern discourse. It’s a matter of listening to the caustic talks of a retired woman, who stands for the dignity of the working class, notably of those in the « people » who contributed in writing History. She resists the loss of self-esteem and peer-group thanks to the knowledge of social and political history and she relies to her own knowledge and experiences to tackle in the neighbourhood the dominant discourses.
