The pedestrian experience, in addition to being strictly related to the physical environment, also represents a way of approaching the other, It is also a means for recreation and the material and symbolic exchange that makes possible the socio-spatial appropriation of the urban environment. However, in the case of the urban peripheries of Latin America, the experience of mobility is limited by social elements that affect passers-by in different ways. Based on 20 interviews with residents of Lima Norte and El Callao during the Covid-19 pandemic, we approach the experiences related to the quality of urban services, recreation and leisure spaces, and the feeling of insecurity in the streets. We seek to explore the perceptions that residents of peripheral districts in Lima Norte and El Callao develop about public space from their pedestrian experience. In this regard, we found that the pedestrian experience of residents is marked by insecurity in the streets, but in turn is affected by differences related to gender. This difference marks the development of particular walking strategies in public spaces.
