Tumor deposits (TDs), initially recognized in colorectal cancer (CRC), have been identified in various other cancer types, including gastric cancer (GC), rendering them a widely studied adverse prognostic factor in gastrointestinal malignancies. They have implications for the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging of CRC patients in specific contexts. This review discusses the definition, diagnosis, origin, and prognostic significance of TDs in CRC and GC patients. The incorporation of TDs into the TNM staging system is anticipated to enhance staging precision, which is very important for making appropriate treatment decisions. Nevertheless, the origins of TDs and their relationship with preoperative cancer therapies remain elusive, necessitating further investigation into this area.
