On June 1, 1991, the fourth pilgrimage of St. John Paul II to his homeland started in Koszalin. The Polish Pope focused his reflection during the homilies delivered in 11 Polish cities on the Decalogue and on the commandment of love. Of fundamental importance was reflection on the first of the commandments, which at the same time was an introduction to the next speeches. “You will have no other gods next to Me” (Ex 19:5) is a call to discover the value of man’s relationship with God, but also to expose the dangers that destroy this relationship, the most evident of which is idolatry. The article attempts to answer the question of what idolatry is and to what forms or manifestations of it are catechized today? As an example of contemporary idolatry, uncritical and immoderate participation in digital culture has been shown, and a smartphone has been indicated as an example of the modern “golden calf”, of course when it is treated as something more than just a useful tool. At the same time, the implementation of catechesis tasks, which is a tool for the formation of mature religiosity and mature humanity that is able to resist idolatrous threats, was shown as a way to avoid the diagnosed dangers.
