Enric Ucelay-Da Cal presents Vìctor Balaguer as a key Romantic historian, who established the canon of Catalan National History.Given the obsessive historicism of Catalan nationalism, this implicitlymakes him a major figure in its logical construction. Ucelay-Da Cal situatesBalaguer in the stream of nineteenth-century historical culture in Europeand the Americas, and presents a broad-based interpretation of Balaguer’srole as a historian by comparison to general historiografic trendsand to political developments.
