Homeschooled Students’ Motivations for learning English as a Foreign Language: A Qualitative Study

Motivations are a very interesting, often-discussed topic, which was often discussed. Not only in regular schools where students have to take the materials offered, motivations are also necessary to discuss in homeschooling setting. It is crucial to find out these homeschooled students’ motivations in learning English. As we know, this digital era, English is essential to be learned and mastered. This study revealed twelve homeschooled students’ motivations in learning English. The data were collected through questionnaires given to all the students, and interviews with 2 students. Given questions around motivations, it was found that the majority of the respondents had intrinsic motivation. It means that these homeschooled learners learn English because they love the language and the culture. Hopefully, this study can shed a light to the study of motivations among English language learners.
