Jules de Laurière (1825-1894) is a pioneering figure of what could be called by photographic journalism in archeology. Active member of the largest French archaeological societies and associations he will continue to travel throughout Europe, and North Africa to document through the image, the ruins, museums and excavations of these regions of the world. Through the reconstitution of the body of this archaeologist-photographer we have wished to observe two pivotal decades for the institutionalization of the archaeological discipline, namely the years 1870-1890 which coincide with the explosion of the number of learned societies and the birth of a new field photograph.
