In the North of the Maghreb (North Africa), widespread pastoral transhumance in arid and semi-arid areas has always been a major activity. In drylands, this animal husbandry has gone through major changes in the past few decades, mostly due to the effect of modernization (green revolution). This has transformed whole sectors of agriculture in developing countries. In other regions of the world, other forms of pastoral herding have also participated in this revolution, but the use of different means and techniques has not led to a change in lifestyle for the herders and their livestock. In the Algerian steppe, the new means and techniques have led to rapid and original changes. This paper deals with these transformations.
