Credit was one of the instruments used in the late Middle Ages by the Castilian monarchs to cope with extraordinary needs. One of the ways in which it manifested itself was the “empréstito” (forced loan) demanded of the subjects, on which the related papers are still scarce. This paper discusses the credit that John II required to the council of Seville in 1429, whose collection was very con-troversial due to the rejections of the different distributions made by both the royal treasury and the municipal authorities.
