The article deals with the project-based method of teaching that is considered to be a matter of current interest in the development of the main students’ core competences. The aim of the paper is to study the theory and practice of using the project-based method in teaching foreign students Russian as a foreign language, as well as specific characteristics of a problem-research project as an interactive form of teaching are described in the paper; different types and kinds of problem based research projects are singled out; specific features of each type are studied. Theoretical and experimental research methods form the bases of the study, such as the comparative historical analyses of the national and foreign literature corresponding to the theme and problem of the research, pedagogical observation, analysis of students’ speech products and written outputs. The result of the work is the development, grounding and characteristics of the problem-based projects used in teaching medical university students Russian as a foreign language.
