The article raises the issue of importance of artworks in the historical and battle genres for cultivating a civic-minded person. The desire of modern Russian artists to convey heroic pages in the history of our Fatherland on the one hand and their inattention to the reproduction of the material culture of the eras depicted on the other hand reduce the artistic value and, hence, the educational value of their artworks. This study reviews the works of the M. Grekov Studio artists on the theme of the 1812 Patriotic War from the perspective of auxiliary disciplines such as uniformology and vexillology. We also give consideration to the creativity of the well-known painter A. Averyanov, who was very attentive to detail and conducted extensive research into plot he was going to depict in his painting. The article gives credit to participants of historical military re-enactments for their help in the development of modern Russian historical and battle-scene painting, who are involved in both research and uniformological design. Thus, in the early 21st century, the art that reflects the heroic history of Russia is receiving more and more attention from the audience, contributing to the growth of national consciousness.
